About
Greater Seattle AreaI was the CEO of the Allen Institute for AI since its inception in 2013 until Sept 30th 2022. I've been a Professor at the University of Washington's Computer Science department since 1991, and a Venture Partner at the Madrona Venture Group since 2000. I am the founder of the AI2 Incubator.
My academic awards include: IJCAI Distinguished Paper Award (2005), AAAI Fellow (2003), National Young Investigator Award (1993), and two Test of Time Awards from ACL (2022) and from IUI (2022).
In 2024, I founded and ran the non-profit TrueMedia.org.
I was also the Founder/Co-Founder of several earlier startups, including Farecast (acquired by Microsoft in 2008), Decide (acquired by eBay in 2013), and Vercept (acquired by Anthropic in 2026).
Specialties: fundamental problems in the study of AI, Machine Reading, deepfake detection, and agents.
