Leadership roles in both public and private sectors, with extensive experience at the intersection of technology, business and government.

Served as Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, and focused the agency on unleashing the opportunities of wired & wireless broadband. Led development and execution of the first U.S. National Broadband Plan, and drove major actions to extend broadband access, accelerate the rollout of next-generation land and space networks, and modernize FCC rules for digital media and communications. Extended FCC’s international engagement, visiting more than 20 countries, leading US delegations, and engaging with global leaders on broadband, internet & data policy, and cybersecurity. FCC named most improved agency in the federal government and one of Wired magazine’s “top seven disrupters”. Served on President-elect Obama’s Transition board, and as senior technology and policy advisor to the Obama campaign.

Currently: Senior Advisor to Carlyle, a leading global investment firm, after 10 years as Partner and Managing Director. Chairman of the Board of Sonos (Nasdaq: SONO); member of the board of directors of Mastercard (NYSE: MA)and chairman of Audit Committee; and member of the board of directors of Mattel (Nasdaq: MAT). Served on the board of directors of Sprint (NYSE: S) until its successful sale to T-Mobile in 2020. Strategic angel investor.

Prior to FCC, senior executive and member of Barry Diller’s Office of the Chairman at IAC (Nasdaq: IAC), which operated digital media & commerce businesses, including Ticketmaster, Expedia, Match, cable networks (USA Network, SciFi, Bravo), film & TV studios.

National security experience: Served on President’s Intelligence Advisory Board, and on National Security Agency Board of Advisors Engagement Panel. Earlier, on staff of Congressional Iran-Contra Committee, and before than an aide to then-Representative Charles Schumer.

Served as law clerk to U.S. Supreme Court Justice David Souter. Graduate of Harvard Law School and Columbia College (both manga cum laude). Taught joint Harvard Business & Law School class: “Running a Federal Agency: Lessons from Business, Technology and Game Theory”. Son of immigrants, led US delegation to 65th anniversary of liberation of Auschwitz.
